What a VIN actually tells you

A VIN is seventeen characters and it never contains the letters I, O or Q — precisely so they cannot be confused with 1 and 0.

The three parts

  • Characters 1 to 3 say who built it and where.
  • Characters 4 to 9 describe the vehicle: model, body, engine, restraint systems. This is the part the parts counter cares about.
  • Characters 10 to 17 identify this particular unit: model year, plant, and the serial number.

Why they ask for it and not the model

Because the same model year can carry two different engines, three gearboxes and two brake systems depending on the plant and the week it was built. “A 2016 sedan” is not enough to order a part; the VIN is.

Where to read it

Bottom of the windscreen on the driver’s side, on the door pillar sticker, and on the insurance papers. For vehicles sold in the United States, the NHTSA publishes a free decoder of those middle characters.

A sheet you can show at the counter.

Questions people ask before buying.

What does a VIN actually tell you?

The make, the model, the year, where it was built and the engine and equipment it left the factory with. Not who owned it.

Where do I find the VIN?

On the windscreen at the base, on the driver's door pillar, and on the registration papers.

Is it safe to share it?

The VIN alone identifies the vehicle, not the person. Even so, POCCard vehicle sheets are never indexed by search engines.
