Digital vCard: the file that lands in somebody’s phone book

A vCard is a small text file — the extension is .vcf — that almost every phone knows how to read. Open one and the phone offers to add a contact, already filled in. It is the oldest and least glamorous part of a digital business card, and it is the part that decides whether you end up in somebody’s phone or not.

Why the version matters

There are two in use. Version 3.0 is older and understood by everything, including the address book on a phone bought eight years ago. Version 4.0 is newer and tidier, and some of those older address books simply refuse it: the person taps, nothing happens, and they assume your card is broken.

POCCard serves 3.0 by default and 4.0 on request. Not because 3.0 is better, but because a contact that fails to save is worse than one saved in an old format.

What goes inside

Name, role, company, phones, e-mail, website and address. Your photo travels inside the file, so you appear in their phone book with a face and not just a name — that is the difference between being findable in six months and being a name they do not recognize. WhatsApp goes in as a phone number tagged as such, your bio goes in the notes field, and your social profiles go in as links.

The QR is just a way to reach it

A QR code holds an address, nothing else. Scanning one opens your card, and the card offers the file. Handing over a QR that holds the whole vCard is possible and a bad idea: it produces a dense code that fails to scan in poor light, and once printed it can never be changed.

Where the file comes from

Every POCCard has a «Save contact» button that builds the file the moment it is asked for, from what your card says today. Change your phone number and the next person to tap gets the new one. Nothing is pre-generated and nothing goes stale.

Questions people ask before buying.

What is a .vcf file?

A small text file holding one person's contact details in a format almost every phone understands. Opening it offers to add the contact, already filled in.

Which vCard version does POCCard use?

3.0 by default, because older address books refuse 4.0 and the person just sees nothing happen. 4.0 is served on request.

Does my photo go in the contact?

Yes, embedded in the file. You appear in their phone book with a face, which is what makes you findable months later.
