NFC or QR: which to print

A chip looks better. A QR works more often. Printing both costs almost nothing and removes the only real failure mode.

What NFC is good at

Touching. No app, no aiming, no light. On most recent phones it just opens. It also survives being in a pocket, which paper does not.

What NFC is bad at

Being read at a distance, being read by an older phone, being read through a thick case, and being read by someone who has never done it and does not know where the antenna is.

What a QR is good at

Everything a camera can see: across a table, on a screen, on a poster, printed on a receipt. And it can carry the contact details themselves, so it saves with no signal at all — a chip cannot do that, because a chip carries an address and an address needs a network.

What to print

Chip on the front, QR on the back. Whoever knows how to tap will tap; whoever does not will point a camera. Both end up at the same address.

A card that carries both.

Questions people ask before buying.

NFC or QR: which should I print?

Both, if you can. NFC is faster for whoever has it; the QR works on every phone and at a distance.

Do all phones read NFC?

Nearly every phone since 2018, and iPhones read tags without opening anything. Older ones fall back to the QR.

How small can the QR be?

Two centimetres square at arm's length, three if it will be scanned further away. Keep the white margin around it.
